Big Picture Background
It should be impossible to read the book of Acts without seeing how natural planting churches was for Jesus’s first century followers. Meaning: the mission of Jesus cannot not be separated from starting churches.
Christianity grew through starting new congregations then, and it continues to do so now. New York pastor Tim Keller says: “Dozens of studies confirm that the average new church gains 1/3 to 2/3 of its new members from the ranks of people who are not attending any worshipping body, while churches over 10-15 years of age gain 80-90% of new members by transfer from other congregations.”
We express this in our vision: hundreds of lives transformed and tens of congregations started (we use the word congregations to be deliberately inclusive of different models – sites, plants and replants).
As I outlined in a recent sermon, we believe God Cares About the City, and it’s our passion and desire to be engaged with the mission of Jesus in London, through making disciples here at the Chapel and investing our energy and resources into church planting.
It’s with this in mind that I’m delighted to announce that Westminster Chapel is planning to plant a church in Walthamstow, in partnership with Commission, under the leadership of a gifted and gospel-driven couple, Dan and Chrissie Skead.
Dan has served faithfully as an Elder at the Chapel, coming up on two years now, in preparation for a future plant. Together they have served in many ways in the church, gaining invaluable experience, most recently overseeing our Life Groups ministry.
When we announced our 2020 vision – to see 300 gathering at Chapel on Sundays; 50% of the first phase of our Building Project completed, and one new congregation started, all by the end of 2020, we knew we were already on the way to seeing the latter of goal realised.
We, and Commission, have been prayerfully talking with the Skeads for some time about planting, hearing from God together about timing, location and next steps.
Walthamstow is God’s leading through the coming together of several prophetic words from our family of churches.
With the spiritual fathering of Guy Miller, Malcolm Kayes and the Commission team, we want to release Dan and Chrissie to plant in Walthamstow, sending a team of 9-18 people from the Chapel and Commission, to see more people come to know Jesus.
Here to tell you more about this exciting news is Dan and Chrissie:
As they mention, Walthamstow is a diverse place of rapid change, with need of community and more good churches. Dan and Chrissie will be moving up soon and starting to plan and gather others.
